This is the portable counterpart of URL Gather, a simple-to-use software utility that allows you to collect website bookmarks from Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, so you can access them easier from just one place.
Makes no changes to registry entries
As there is no setup pack involved, you can drop the program files in any location on the HDD and just run the executable. There is also the possibility of saving URL Gather Portable to a USB flash disk or similar storage unit, in order to run it on any machine effortlessly and without prior installers.
An important aspect to take into account is that the Windows registry does not get updated with new entries, and leftovers do not remain on the hard disk after removing the utility.
The interface of URL Gather does not contain visually attractive elements but it is intuitive to navigate. You can import Internet Explorer favorites and Firefox bookmarks from specified locations, along with URLs from common bookmarks files (HTM, HTML format) or a previously saved URL Gather data file (UGR format).
Analyze a variety of website details
The list shows the title, address and remark for each website. You can open addresses immediately, copy them to the Clipboard, view their properties, as well as create new URLs and group them into different folders.
Individual shortcuts files for each URL item or a single bookmark file containing all addresses can be exported. In addition, you can use a search function for titles, addresses and/or remarks when dealing with numerous records, as well as move selected items to other directories.
As far as program settings are concerned, you can set the frame to stay on top of other windows and to hide when minimized, alter the default web browser for opening URLs, customize font properties, password-protect URL Gather, as well as search for duplicate URLs.
The program does not put a strain on computer performance, since it runs on a very low amount of CPU and RAM. It has a good response time and works fine, without causing the OS to hang, crash or display error messages. We have not come across any issues in our tests.
Although the interface needs a lot of work in the beautification department, URL Gather proves to be a reliable software program for collecting URLs from web browsers. Too bad its support does not extend to other popular browsers such as Chrome or Opera.
